Anderson did not respond to emails from The Oregonian/Oregonlive. But Retraction Watch, a MacArthur Foundation funded blog that monitors research retractions, quoted him admitting misconduct.
The University of Oregon investigated the misconduct and reported it to federal officials. Office of Research Integrity published a notice saying the UO grad student engaged in misconduct in research supported by the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institutes of Health. Grants listed in the notice amounted to $5.47 million over eight years. The notice said that Anderson would be subject to intensive supervision when conducting any further research.
Awh and Edward Vogel, another top neuroscientist, set back a University of Oregon initiative to build a cluster of excellence in brain research when they decided last year to move their labs and research grants to the University of Chicago. The UO Institute of Neuroscience made an aggressive counteroffer for "the two Eds," but it was difficult for the public school to compete with an elite university that has a large endowment, UO psychology department head Ulrich Mayr said at the time.
"I offer my sincerest apologies to Dr. Edward Awh, the University of Oregon and to the field and its constituents for undermining the integrity of the scientific method and eroding the trust upon which it is built."
"I made an error in judgment during the processing and dissemination of research materials collected as a graduate student in Dr. Edward Awh's lab at the University of Oregon," said Anderson, according to Retraction Watch.
One of the four papers to be retracted because of Anderson's misconduct was published in the same journal. Others were published by the journals Psychological Science; Attention, Perception and Psychophysics; and The Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance.
Nationally known brain researcher Edward Awh, who recently moved to the University of Chicago, declined to say why David E. Anderson, the UO grad student, knowingly falsified research results.
Brad Shelton, UO interim vice president for research and innovation, called the data fabrication case an "isolated incident." He said professional misconduct is unacceptable in all forms. "This is the only case that I've actually seen," he said.
Anderson, Awh and researchers at the University of California, San Diego, retracted a paper earlier this year published in The Journal of Neuroscience, saying they had realized their analytic code contained an error. They said their conclusion remained accurate after correcting the computer code mistake, but said their paper still contained "some findings that we no longer believe to be robust."

"The broad direction of our research program is unaffected by the retraction of these papers, and ongoing work is still moving forward," Awh wrote. "Research misconduct is something that we take extremely seriously, and we are absolutely committed to doing robust and careful research."
Awh, a neuroscientist, studies selective attention and working memory, using a combination of behavioral and brain imaging methods. His UO lab also examined core cognitive deficits in people diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Awh, whose name is pronounced "Oh," said in an email to The Oregonian/Oregonlive that Anderson began working in his lab in the fall of 2009.
Shelton and others familiar with the case won't say why Anderson faked research results. Shelton declined to release investigation reports. But the false information was evidently fundamental to the research, so papers must be retracted instead of corrected, as sometimes occurs.
A former University of Oregon professor who received millions of dollars in federal grant money confirmed Wednesday that he's requested retractions of four research papers published in scholarly journals because one of his graduate students fabricated data.

The Office of Research Integrity said in its notice issued this week that Anderson, "knowingly falsified data by removing outlier values or replacing outliers with mean values to produce results that conform to predictions."
"We had an allegation of potential misconduct, and when we have such an allegation, our policies dictate a very explicit process," Shelton said. "Based on this one case, this process and the policies that sit behind it are truly very good."
